Capture Cabinet

Concept

The design for the cabinet was inspired by a research project about the history of the timber industry along the River Lea and based around the idea of cabinet of curiosities.

Instead of being defined by its contents, the Capture Cabinet embodies a story in itself. The outward design mimics that of a 19th century analogue camera, the interior constists of an intricate pattern of mouldings, which were inspired by a catalogue of moulding designs from the 19th century. The drawer of the cabinet also functions as a working pinhole camera.

The interior design of the cabinet consists of an intricate pattern of mouldings, which are only revealed when the doors are opened. These were inspired by the mouldings once manufactured by James Lathams Ltd. when they were based along the River Lea, London in the early 1900s.

The image taken with the cabinet is the section of Lea River where the Lathams was based.

The cabinet has been desplayed during the Raw Materials exhibition at Bow Arts, London/UK.

Capture Cabinet is now part of a private collection.
